Martin Shapi is a Land economist with the focus on the trade-off between property rights, which is sometimes mistakenly called tenure security in communal commercial areas, enhanced investment incentives in land, agricultural productivity and Land Market are his prime research focus. The efficiency and profitability of smallholder farmers is another research interest of Mr. Shapi. Teenage Pregnancy and factors contributing to better or poor school performance, access to tertiary education, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Gender and access to information communication technology are amongst his secondary research focus.
